In 2010, Mercy-USA distributed 19,800 pounds of rice seed, 825 pounds of maize seed and 407,000 pounds of fertilizer to small farmers affected by the September 30 and October 1, 2009 earthquakes on the island of Sumatra. These agricultural inputs, provided by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), were distributed to 2,050 earthquake-affected farming families (over 9,600 people) in 11 villages in the districts of Padang Pariaman and Agam. Mercy-USA also provided technical assistance and training to the beneficiary farmers. Combined, these agricultural inputs and training are helping these 2,050 earthquake-affected families support themselves.
Agriculture Assistance and Training for Farmers East Aceh District From September 2007 to July 2008, with the support of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Mercy-USA for Aid and Development distributed 1200 packages of vegetable/fruit seeds (rice, chili and watermelon), 40 livestock, 13 water pumps and 140 fish production packages to over 1,560 tsunami-affected farming families in East Aceh District in Indonesia. Mercy-USA also provided these families with training specific to the particular material received and assisted them in marketing their produce and in forming cooperatives.
Island of Simuelue and Ache Timur District From July 2005 to July 2006, with the support of FAO, Mercy-USA distributed 87 hand tractors, 4 threshers, and 1,300 hoes and rakes that are being used by over 3,000 farming families on the island of Simuelue and Aceh Timur District. Mercy-USA also provided 1,930 of these families with 63,000 pounds of rice and other vegetable seeds, as well as 456,000 pounds of various fertilizers. These projects are helping the beneficiary families to support themselves once again.
Education English and Computer Training From June to December 2009, Mercy-USA carried out a fourth round of English language and computer training courses for orphans in Aceh Province. Forty orphans successfully graduated from these courses. Twenty studied English, while the other twenty learned how to use common office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. They also learned valuable Internet skills. Since project inception in 2007, approximately 150 orphans have completed these courses.
From February to May 2009, Mercy-USA carried out a third round of English language and computer training courses for orphans in Aceh Province. Forty orphans successfully graduated from these courses. Twenty studied English, while the other twenty learned how to use common office software.
From September to December 2008, Mercy-USA carried out a second round of English language and computer training courses for orphans in Aceh Province. Forty orphans from the Al-Azziziyah Orphan Center located in Lambaro, Aceh Besar successfully completed these courses. Twenty studied English, while the other twenty learned how to use common office software.
From November 2007 to April 2008, Mercy-USA carried out the initial training sessions. About 30 orphans successfully completed these courses, which were held at Mercy-USA’s office and 2 orphanages, the Muhammadiyah and Penyantun Islam Orphan Centers.
Food and Shelter
Earthquake Relief Efforts In October and November 2009, Mercy-USA’s office in Indonesia distributed food packages and family kits to 1,000 families severely affected by two deadly earthquakes that struck Indonesia’s island of Sumatra. In addition, 347 of these families received temporary shelters. Mercy-USA assisted survivors of two earthquakes that struck the Indonesian Island of Sumatra in March 2007. M-USA’s disaster response team provided food packages and two blankets each to 750 families affected by these earthquakes. Previously, Mercy-USA had assisted survivors of a May 2006 earthquake on the Indonesian Island of Java. M-USA’s disaster response team provided 1,000 earthquake-affected families in four districts of Java (Pundong, Imogiri, Bambanglipuro and Klaten) with cooking kits (including small cooking units, pots and pans), food packages (including rice and oil) and water-resistant tents.
Flood Relief Mercy-USA assisted survivors of flash floods that devastated parts of Aceh in December 2006, distributing rice and household kits to 350 families left homeless by these floods in Aceh Tamiang district.
Tsunami Relief and Reconstruction From August 2005 to July 2006, Mercy-USA rebuilt 97 homes in the village of Seubun Ketapang in Aceh Besar District. On August 16, 2006, M-USA officially handed over the new homes to the families in a formal ceremony that included local and national Indonesian government officials, community members and a children’s program.
In April 2007, M-USA completed construction on a deep well to provide fresh water for the residents of Seubun Ketapang. This well also includes a tower with a 5,000-liter tank capacity.
From April to July 2005, M-USA constructed a fresh water system for 300 homeless persons living in a temporary shelter in Aceh Besar District.
In January and February 2005, M-USA distributed food packages (containing rice, noodles, canned sardines, biscuits, bottled water, etc.) to 1,200 homeless families near Banda Aceh and Meulaboh.
In March 2005, M-USA distributed six-month household kits (containing kitchen items, towels, toiletries, clothing, plastic mats, candles, matches, etc.) to 400 homeless families near Banda Aceh and Meulaboh.
In February and March 2005, M-USA also dug water wells and built latrines in ten camps/temporary shelters in the district of Aceh Besar. This water and sanitation project benefited approximately 4,000 persons.
