Help Burma’s Rohingya

Mercy-USA for Aid and Development is partnering with the Turkish Red Crescent to provide food packages to these desperate refugees arriving in Bangladesh. Meal-ready food kits are being given to freshly arrived refugees, and then once settled, families are receiving a food basket that will feed their family for a month.

Donate_btnDesperate, afraid and running for their lives, more than 620,000 Rohingya have fled their villages in Myanmar into Bangladesh in the last three months. United Nations humanitarian agencies have stated that the flood of refugees is “unprecedented in terms of volume and speed.” With this latest influx, the U.N. estimates that there are now over 1 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

Yousuf’s Story

Yousof4webMercy-USA for Aid and Development International Programs Deputy Director and staff visited the emergency relief project for Rohingya Refugees in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh in January, 2018. During the trip, we met 10-year-old Yousuf who had come with his sister to collect their family’s allotment of food aid. With a smile that captivated everyone, Yousuf invited us to visit his family in their makeshift home.

OmarAliYousof4webWe followed him along the 1 1/2 mile walk back up to his family hut perched precariously on a hill. We met his parents and 8 siblings, all surviving in a small shelter made from bamboo and plastic tarps. Yousuf’s mother gratefully accepted the food basket, floor mats and set about giving the children some of the nutrition biscuits included in the package. The family told us of the horrors they fled from in Myanmar and while grateful to have survived when so many did not, they are unsure of what the future will hold for them.
Your donation will help Rohingya families like Yousof’s survive in Bangladesh.
