Mercy-USA Launches the Urban Warmth Project for Detroit’s Most Vulnerable Citizens

DETROIT, MI: Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, an international humanitarian organization is launching a domestic humanitarian effort in Detroit with the Urban Warmth Project. The organization’s staff and volunteers will distribute winter care packages to families and single adults in three of Detroit’s homeless shelters in an all day effort on January 27, 2018.

Kayla Botelho of Mercy-USA said, “The folks who manage these shelters told us that by the end of January their donated supplies dwindle while the need only increases during these very cold months.”
The organization has arranged three shifts of staff and volunteers eager to distribute the care packages that will help fill the needs gap for the city’s homeless population. Two of the three shelters covered serve families exclusively.

The care packages will include winter items like blankets, hats and gloves plus basic hygiene items. Mercy-USA will also donate disposable diapers to the shelters. “Feminine hygiene, diapers and simple things like shampoo are necessities we take for granted but are often unaffordable for families forced out on the streets to survive. We wanted to make sure that beside keeping warm, the specific needs of women and their children were being met.”

Winter care packages will be distributed at the following homeless shelters:
